Initially a hotel, then the residence of Queen Marie-Henriette from 1895 until her death in 1902, the Villa was in turn a hospital for convalescents during the First World War, a home for colonials and First Army headquarters in 1944. After 1963, the buildings were acquired by the municipal administration and various services, including the museum, were installed. The Villa Royale site has been listed since 1972, with its beautiful garden and stables, now home to the Horse Museum of Spa.
The collections, an overview of which is presented in our permanent exhibition Spa Story, consist of a wide range of objects and documents relating to the history of the town of Spa and its surroundings.
Among its treasures are historic posters depicting key events in Spa, Jolités, local wooden handicrafts, ancient postcards, photographs, paintings and engravings by local artists and views of the region, old maps and numerous archives.
Our temporary exhibitions are an opportunity to highlight the objects kept in our reserves.
